Midlands survey work, from the Lincolnshire Wolds to the Birmingham fringe.
Midlands work is mostly industrial, agricultural and infrastructure, and it is mostly driven by accuracy of level and control rather than by terrain. A surprising amount of it is volumetric and setting-out, where a small error repeats itself across a very large surface.
Ground and workload
What Midlands ground conditions mean for the survey you need.
Lincolnshire Wolds and the coastal strip
Chalk, gravel and marine clay in close succession. Levels change quickly over short distances, which makes sampling density the thing that decides whether the surface is usable.
The Trent and Fen edge
Alluvium and soft ground with real settlement and flood risk. Drainage outfalls, levels and flood risk are decided together or not at all.
Triassic sandstones and igneous intrusions, central Midlands
Stable, well-drained ground that is straightforward to survey. The difficulty here is access and programme, not the terrain.
Coalfield ground, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire
Old mine workings, subsidence and made ground. A topographic survey on its own will not describe the risk; it has to be read alongside the mining records.
